11 True Crime Series You Need To Watch Now

1. Don’t F**k With Cats

This is one of the best Netflix docuseries that I have ever watched. There are a few scenes that might upset you, especially if you love cats as much as I do, but other than that, this is binge-worthy and you won’t be able to stop watching once you started.

2. Cocaine Cowboys: The Kings of Miami

This is the tale of Willy Falcon and Sal Magluta that started in the 70s in Miami, Florida. If you can get past the horrible intro song by Pitbull, you will find it’s actually extremely interesting to see their journey from petty party boys to becoming the Cocaine Cowboys of the 80s. The amount of money these guys made is mind-blowing!

3. Making A Murderer

This is a docuseries about the unlawful incarceration of Steven Avery in 1985 for a rape he didn’t commit. He was in jail for almost 15 years before he was released after DNA evidence was brought to light that proved his innocence. The gross incompetence of the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Department is on full display here. The story doesn’t end after he gets released, the title kind of gives it away! Be warned though, when you start watching this you will not stop. There are even rumours that they might be doing a Part 3 sometime in the future.

4. Wild Wild Country

Cults are extremely dangerous and this one was no exception. This is the story of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh (Osho) and how he moved his ashram from India to Oregon in 1981 with the help of his secretary, Ma Anand Sheela. The town they designed and built was truly spectacular and impressive until it all went to hell in 1983.

5. John Grisham’s The Innocent Man

This is basically the same story as with Steven Avery in Making a Murderer, but with different victims, who were also convicted of crimes they did not commit. Renowned novelist John Grisham discovered these events and he started investigating and researching them and ended up writing a book. It was the only book he ever wrote that was non-fiction, even though if you read it, you would probably think it is a work of fiction, it is so unbelievable.

6. Wormwood

“Your father was in New York. He had an accident. He fell or jumped out the window, and he died.”

“How does fall, jump and accident… How can you arrange this triangle of terms, so that this thing gets sorted out in any possible way?”

This is the story of a civilian who unknowingly took LSD as part of a CIA experiment and things went terribly wrong for him and his family.

If you are interested in reading the Rockefeller Commission Report (where the CIA discloses many operations including their Project MK Ultra, a mind control study), you can read it here: Rockefeller Commission Report

7. The Staircase

A man’s wife tragically falls down the stairs and then he is charged with her murder. Everyone is shocked because they had a relationship that everyone who knew them was jealous of. What looks like a horrible accident at first glance, starts to look more and more suspicious as more facts come to light. There are a lot of grim photos of the accident as well as the body afterwards, so be warned that this is not for sensitive viewers.

8. Unabomber: In His Own Words

Theodore (Ted) Kaczynski hates technology and what it has done to society. If you have always thought that Ted Kaczynski is pure evil, you might be right, but also a bit wrong. He was clearly very intelligent and until you have read his manifesto yourself, you will not understand why he did what he did. If you read his manifesto there are a lot of things happening today that he predicted when he wrote his manifesto in 1995. Planting bombs and blowing people up is wrong and terrible, but he says that if he didn’t do this, no one would ever have read his manifesto, and he is right about that. If you’re interested in reading his manifesto to understand why he built all those bombs, you can find it here: Industrial Society and Its Future

9. World’s Most Wanted

This series includes five episodes, each featuring one of the most wanted people in the entire world. These five people include Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada Garcia: The Head of the Sinaloa Cartel, Félicien Kabuga: The Financier of the Genocide in Rwanda, Samantha Lewthwaite: The White Widow, Semion Mogilevich: The Russian Mafia Boss, and Matteo Messina Denaro: Cosa Nostra’s Last Godfather.

10. Sophie: A Murder in West Cork

This is a three-episode series about the mysterious and brutal murder of French tourist Sophie Toscan du Plantier. She was found outside her Irish holiday home at 10 am on 23 December 1996, beaten to death. The Gardaí ultimately had one suspect. Did he do it?

11. Fear City: New York vs The Mafia

It’s the 70’s and the Five Families are running things. Gambino, Genovese, Lucchese, Colombo, and Bonanno, these were (and still are) the Five Families who you do not want to cross. This 3 part series is not for the faint hearted. You will see a body within the first minute of pressing play, so don’t say I didn’t warn you. Fear City: New York vs The Mafia, shows you the extent to which the Mafia ruled New York in the 1970’s and how Rudy Giuliani put an end to it and ultimately saved New York.
