12 Classic Halloween Movies to Watch Now

When I hear “Halloween,” I think HORROR movies! So here are 12 popular Halloween/Horror movies to watch this Halloween. Even if you’ve seen them before, they are worth the rewatch!

1. The Shining (1980)

The cinematography, the location, Jack Nicholson… This movie has been referenced in so many other movies it is impossible to name them all. This movie is about a writer that takes his family to a closed down hotel for the winter so that he can work on his writing. Things do not go as planned as the hotel has a few guests no one knows about, and they want company.

Heeeeeere’s Johnny!

2. Alien (1979)

Sigourney Weaver is brilliant in this first instalment of the Alien movies. I can’t believe it came out in 1979, it was definitely a movie that came out ahead of its time. This is probably where my (and a few other people’s) fascination with aliens started.

In space, no one can year you scream…

3. Psycho (1960)

If you’ve never seen an Alfred Hitchcock movie, this is the one to start with. Psycho is about a woman on the run, who rather unfortunately, decides to overnight in the Bates Motel.

4. World War Z (2013)

A Zombie movie starring Brad Pitt? You better believe it! In this movie, Brad is the hero (duh) who has to save the entire world from the zombie infestation.

Brad kicking some zombie ass!

5. Zombieland (2009)

Woody Harrelson stars alongside Jesse Eisenberg and Emma Stone in this comedic/gory zombie movie as a down on his luck drifter who sets out to save the world from zombies.

Remember the rules!

6. Get Out (2017)

This one really deserves a spot on the list of the most popular Halloween movies ever. A guy goes away for the weekend with his girlfriend to meet her parents. Things start to get weirder and weirder as her family’s closet racism starts to surface. He tries to connect with the black servants working at the family home, but they act extremely strange. He tries making small talk with another black guy at the family’s party, but he acts even stranger. This is a really good scary movie. Watch it!

7. Shaun of the Dead (2004)

Here is one of my all-time favourites! This movie is a cult classic and everyone serious about movies and/or zombies know this film. It’s another zombie comedy, starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost as our fearless zombie killers who tries to save their town from zombies.

8. It (2017)

Somehow this one is even scarier than the original It (1990). In the original two-part miniseries, Tim Curry plays Pennywise who terrorises a group of friends aka The Losers Club. That miniseries messed me up big time when I watched it the first time, keeping in mind that I was 10 at the time! My boyfriend convinced me to watch this remake the other day, and I almost didn’t make it. Bill Skarsgård’s portrayal of Pennywise is brilliant and horrifying to watch. If you don’t have a fear of clowns, you will after watching this.

9. A Quiet Place (2018)

I know a few people who will not survive for 3 seconds in a scenario where you have to be as quiet as possible. Husband and wife duo, John Krasinski and Emily Blunt are brilliant in this movie. They both have great acting ranges in that they are brilliant in comedies but in this movie, they clearly show that they can play serious roles as well.

10. The Conjuring (2013)

This movie starring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga (LOVE her – watch Bates Motel and you will too), is about two paranormal investigators who try to help a family who is terrorised by some evil presence in their farmhouse. This is based on a true story, which makes it even scarier.

11. Split (2017)

This is probably James McAvoy’s best performance as an actor, ever. He plays Kevin, a man who is diagnosed with 23 distinct personalities. He kidnaps three girls and they try to escape before it’s too late.

12. The Exorcist (1973)

One more cult classic for you, starring Ellen Burstyn and Linda Blair. Both of them were nominated for Oscars in 1974. Linda Blair was exceptionally good in her role as Regan MacNeil, the possessed girl.

I hope you liked my list of the most popular Halloween movies to watch this Halloween. Let me know which one is your favorite!
